Clare Smith studied at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design where she gained 1st Class honors and Masters degrees in photography. Since graduating she has completed a number of bodies of work which she has exhibited in both group shows and individually, the most recent of which were at Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham and at The New Art Gallery Walsall.

Her practice and resulting work is primarily concerned with the intangibility of her chosen subjects in relation to the photographic medium. Near Infinity focused upon the horizon; the point within a landscape that can never be physically reached, and through Meniscus she concentrated upon the subtle balance between the inherent stillness of the medium and the perpetual movement of the subject.

She has taught at a number of Universities as a Visiting Lecture and currently has a post as a photographic lecturer at Herefordshire College of Art and Design.
